CPD and Chartered status, why bother?
I had some interesting conversations this week about Continued Professional Development and Chartered Marketer status. The general gist of these conversations was 'why bother?'
I had one member who said I'm too old now and one who felt that chartered was just another badge to collect that they would leave to someone else. Like I said, interesting.
As a member of The Chartered Institute of Marketing surely you are passionate about your profession? Speaking to these two individuals I had my doubts, and was quite disheartened.
If we are ever going to be in a position to demand equal footing with our business peers then we need to show the world that we are passionate and proud and deserved of it.
If we are going to leave the hard work in driving the status of the profession to someone else then where do we expect to go?
Come on guys, stand proud and shout out loud that we are all worthy and make sure that you have all the status so that the industry has the status so that we all benefit.

I meet many people in my daily routine who claim to be the best at their job, only to disappoint me later to find that the reality is that they are very average against others i meet. Personal measurement, done properly, is useful but who of us can really know how others view us. One of my major customers does 360 degree testing where others get to comment on an individual. This is probably a little uncomfortable for the party being measured but why worry if we are as competent as claimed! In truth, we all need something to test ourselves against. Chartered Marketer status is achievable for the many. I am in my late 50s with lots of energy and life yet to give. I am not a badge collector. Marketing changed my perspective completely as my background is specialist sales. Today i am more marketer than salesman and love every minute of it. My working life will be extended because of marketing skills. I will never stop my approach to personal development and thoroughly recommend it to others.
